As a child, Kim spent hours watching construction workers expertly lay down brick by brick in a beautiful pattern. Many years later she decided to make her own 'waaltjes' (stones of a certain size). With her new stones she now makes her own patterns in a playful way.
Inspired by the brick patterns on streets and sidewalks, Kim bakes her own porcelain ‘waaltjes’ (bricks of a certain size), glazes them, and makes playful patterns the size of an average sidewalk tile.
Fascinated by the layering of the screen printing technique, Kim has literally applied layering in this work. By printing the colors on the different layers of plexiglass, an exciting depth effect is created. Available in different sizes and patterns.
Repetition of a shape inspired by the shadow falling in a window frame. This repetition creates a new pattern that casts its own shadow in the new work.
In 2021 Kim created the artwork for the exhibition ‘Dan liever de lucht in'. The secondary school ‘Lek en Linge’ purchased the artwork. It now hangs above the reception area where the people can be viewed from different heights.
The people make a diverse group. Young, old, queer, athletic, leaning on a walking stick, or shuffling behind a walker.
About her inspiration she says: “I was eighteen when I saw an older couple eating an ice cream in a snack bar, seen from behind. That image moved me for various reasons and has never left me. Later I applied this in my work. Everyone can make it their own story. Who are they? Where are they going? What are they thinking about?”
